2018 marks the 45th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, and we’re honoring this important ruling by protesting one of the entities that stand in the way of women receiving comprehensive reproductive healthcare: A Crisis Pregnancy Center (CPC) in Macomb County.
What’s a CPC? A CPC is a facility that poses as a women’s health care center but uses various misleading tactics and other forms of manipulation, including providing false information about abortion, to convince and pressure women into carrying pregnancies to term. CPCs often open up near actual abortion clinics to create confusion for those looking to receive abortion care.
In fact, CPCs grossly outnumber actual abortion clinics in the United States. Per Lady Parts Justice League, there are nearly 4,000 CPCs in the U.S. compared to about 780 abortion clinics.
To make matters worse, CPCs are often not medically licensed, but they often receive taxpayer funding. Per a report from Think Progress in October 2016, Michigan is one of seven states that are funding CPCs by funneling money away from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.
It’s been made abundantly clear that the current administration will do just about anything to strip away access to reproductive healthcare, so now more than ever, we have to stand up and demand reproductive justice.
