From the co-founder of the “Pussyhat Project” (Jayna Zweiman) comes new craftivism project: welcome blankets. The idea is to knit blankets from 2,000+ miles of yarn – the projected length of the president’s proposed U.S./Mexico border wall.
A “welcome blanket” is created to mark the arrival of a new person into the world. The Welcome Blanket Project aims to celebrate new refugees and other immigrants in the United States.
Each blanket will measure about 40” x 40” (if you go by the standard pattern on http://welcomeblanket.org/), and contain 1,200 yards of yarn. This means that participants will need to create 3,200 blankets to reach 2,000 miles – or 3.5 million yards – of yarn.
The blankets will be displayed at the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago from July 18 – December 17, 2017. After the show is completed, the blankets will be distributed to refugees and other immigrants.
