Congress is planning to raise taxes on thousands of students, while giving free millions to billionaires. The proposed tax bill will not only be a disaster for graduate students who rely on tuition waivers, but for all of higher education.
In order to get by, graduate students who work as teaching and research assistants rely on having their tuitions waived. Congress is proposing to count that as taxable income, in effect demanding thousands of dollars more from students who are already struggling with monthly bills. And this is happening at the same time Congress is proposing massive giveaways to Wall Street, corporations, and billionaires.
Graduate students serve our communities; we are the future of higher education, public knowledge, the arts, social justice, public policy, technological innovation, and scientific breakthroughs.
Join the nationwide walkout (#gradtaxwalkout) on Wednesday, November 29th at 1 pm EST to show Congress and the IU administration how vital graduate students are to higher education and the future of our country.
