On Earth Day 2017, Scientists, science enthusiasts, and concerned citizens will converge in Washington, DC and hundreds of cities around the world to peacefully march and voice concern and advocating the importance of science in the face of the Trump Administration. Donald Trump once classified the work of the Environmental Protection Agency as “a disgrace” and has nominated climate change denier Scott Pruitt to lead the EPA, in addition to the harmful nominations of Rick Perry for Energy Secretary and Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Trump has frozen EPA grants and contracts, told career staff not to speak with the press, and has threatened to run agency science through political appointees. Without the protection of this agency and the informed science that allows it to create policies that protect the environment and the resources we harness, we risk damage to our planet and all who inhabit it. This year, we have also seen a rise in the push to legalize medicinal marijuana in our state based on PROVEN scientific medical research. Let us be proactive and encourage policies that help our citizens lead happier, healthier lives! Together, we must encourage our legislature and our local representatives to support SCIENCE and policies that will protect our planet and ourselves. Join us in Charleston this Earth Day as we make our voices heard!
