This is an event for all who care about science and its importance in our everyday lives. Whether you be scientist, science enthusiast, or simply enjoy life, you can show support for the scientific community. We are a satellite march to the March on Washington.
Update from Washington Organizers regarding Diversity:
"At the March for Science, we are committed to highlighting, standing in solidarity with, and acting as allies with black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander, indigenous, non-Christian, women, people with disabilities, poor, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, agender, and intersex scientists and science advocates. We must work to make science available to everyone and encouraging individuals of all backgrounds to pursue science careers, especially in advanced degrees and positions. A diverse group of scientists produces increasingly diverse research, which broadens, strengthens, and enriches scientific inquiry, and therefore, our understanding of the world."
The date in finalized, the march will be held on April 22nd, 2017 (Earth Day.)
The march will begin at the entrance of Downtown Panama City (crossroads 6th St & Harrison Ave.) We will march down Harrison to McKenzie Park, where we will have various activities and events set up for the whole family.
We aim to arrive at the park by 10:00AM, so we insist everyone be at the starting point at 9:30AM to provide time to collect ourselves and march.
At the park, we will have a live stream of the DC march, as well as guest speakers (TBA.) Following the streaming and speakers, we will have various booths and tents set up with different activities, educational materials, and more. Games, experiments, displays and more for people of all ages.
Events at the park will last until 4:00PM.
From beginning to end, we will have a medical area to provide basic care. Water, band-aids, gauze, antibacterial soap, etc, will be provided for those in need. The medical area will also serve as a quiet place to sit for those who may become over-stimulation or have sensory issues. Also, we will be providing volunteers to assist those with: wheelchairs, limited mobility, limited sight, hearing, etc.
We are also working on a sign interpreter, as well as a changing station for small children/infants.
This is a family friendly event. We encourage children of all ages to join us for a fun day of learning, games, and persistance.
We also encourage people from all backgrounds, whether science-related or not to join us. This march is not just for scientists, but for all who appreciate what science has given us. From computers that fit in our pockets, to life-saving medicines, procedures, and technology, we have all benefited from the contributions from those in science.
