May 1, often recognized as International Worker’s Day, is being marked by hundreds of events around the nation to recognize the important role that immigrants play in our communities. Educators across Oregon plan to observe the day by wearing red and holding rallies in several cities, including Bend, Portland, Salem, and Medford. These events are being done in solidarity with Causa, Oregon’s leading Latino immigrant rights organization, which is organizing an event at the State Capitol.
Bend educators, supporters, and students plan to rally before school on May Day in solidarity with students as part of a statewide day of action. The rally will take place at Bend High at 7:30 A.M. The event is being coordinated with the Bend-La Pine School District. Speakers include Don Stearns (Bend Education Association President), Erik Horeis (SEIU staff), and Angela Chisum (candidate for school board).
