As in years past, 15 Muslim and Jewish activists will ride around the city in a mini-bus. This year, we welcome folks who want to take part in #SpreadHummusNotHate to follow our mini-bus in their private cars, and participate with us in events happening along the way. Alternatively, if you are unable to be there for the entire day, we invite you to join us at specific stops along the route. And please come hungry; as always, we will share delicious homemade hummus and pita for free with people we meet at multiple venues along the way.
Our day will kick off at 8:30 AM with a breakfast sendoff at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring; followed by a rally with Muslim and Jewish students at the University of Maryland at 10:15 AM. We will next visit the Gold Room of Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill at 12:30 PM to join Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) to advocate for urgently-needed legislation against hate crimes. Then we head for a rollicking ‘speak-out’ for peace and pluralism at 2:45 PM at Lafayette Square, Washington, D.C. in front of the The White House. We will conclude #SpreadHummusNotHate with a rally on the Quad at American University at 5:00 PM with students from AU and around the DMV calling for communication and cooperation between Muslim and Jewish students and people of all backgrounds. The rally at AU is being hosted by our dear friend, Prof. Akbar S. Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun, Chair of Islamic Studies at AU.
