To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Newtown massacre that took place on December 14, 2012, the Newtown Film team announces a special screening event to further dialogue and hear from an array of American citizens on the devastating and escalating gun violence epidemic plaguing our nation.
Since our 2016 Sundance release, we’ve now had over 1200 theatrical and community screenings across the country, a PBS broadcast to over 2 million viewers, and a robust impact campaign that will carry on into 2018 with an array of calls to action to reduce gun violence.
Most recently, a group of concerned community members from the town of Grinnell, Iowa (pop 9000), reached out to host an unprecedented event in their town. According to their press release:
“We are a group of neighbors, parents, students, educators, co-workers, retirees, volunteers, and business owners, based in Grinnell, Iowa, dedicated to fighting the scourge of gun violence.
As fellow community members of the current president of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and CEO of Brownells, the world’s largest gun parts manufacturer and gun and gun parts seller, we are in a unique position to bear witness and call for constructive change to our country’s gun laws and culture. We are committed to nonviolent action and civil, respectful dialogue. We believe that now is the time to act. Since we began organizing in the wake of the October 1 massacre in Las Vegas, new reports of mass shootings have poured in, most recently from Sutherland Springs, Texas."
We invite the public to join us along with Newtown friends, Iowans, and citizens beyond for a community discussion including interfaith, law enforcement, medical, educator, local leadership and youth perspectives. Participants will include survivors of gun violence as well as gun owners who advocate firearm safety legislation.
Please help us by sharing this and spreading the word!
